In November, we had the last Day Education graduation of 2025. We got to celebrate 8 amazing young people who earned their high school equivalency. Graduation ceremonies on campus are one of the most special things that we do, and this one was no exception. Every graduation we choose character traits for each youth and speak a little bit about them.
Staff member Jessica had the honor of speaking about M, whose journey has been marked by remarkable perserverance and strength, especially after the loss of her mother several years ago. The trait Jessica chose for M was: Determined.
Jessica shared how M’s resolve has been visible in every aspect since arriving at UMYH.
“Determined is the trait I chose. Ever since I have known her, she has done anything she set her mind to. Whether that was buying a car (and having to get another one), a new job, passing a test, etc. I know there were times you wanted to give up and said you were never coming back. But you always showed up the next day anyway. That drive and determination is going to take you as far as you want to go.”
The attendees then collectively sat up a little straighter as she recalled an early assignment M completed. “I remember you had to complete the sentence: The most important thing in my life is…”
M’s answer: “My mom would get to see me.”
As the conference room fell unexplainably even more silent than before Jessica shared what everyone in that room felt: “I just wanted to let you know your mom sees you, and sees everything today and is super proud of you. We are all proud of you.”
A thunderous applause erupted, punctuated by a heartfelt “amen” from the back, leaving very few dry eyes among the staff, youth, and guests.
We are so proud of all of our youth and thank them for letting us walk beside them on their journey, for allowing us to share in their victories and support them on their challenges. Congratulations to all the graduates of 2025!
