Graduation at UMYH is always one of my favorite days. There is something truly special about getting to witness and be a part of such an important moment in a young person’s life.
There is always so much happening behind the scenes to get ready for the big day. We’re running around getting everything set up, watching our youth try on their graduation gowns, listening to speeches from the people who have made an impact during their time here, and meeting the families and support systems who came to celebrate with them. It is a busy day, but it is also a very meaningful one.
While graduation day is full of excitement, I think it is also important to remember everything that happened before that moment.
When youth come to UMYH, they begin by taking assessments to determine their current levels in language, reading, math, social studies, and science. Once we know where they are academically, they begin working through packets and tests to continue progressing through each level.
It may sound like a complicated process when you explain it, but what really stands out to me is the simple fact that our youth keep showing up and putting in the work. They work through each packet, take each test, and continue moving forward.
Eventually, they reach the point where they are ready to take their HiSET. The HiSET is similar to the GED and consists of five different sections. To earn their High School Equivalency, they must successfully pass all five.
That is no small accomplishment!
Honestly, I’m not sure I could pass all five tests myself! That is why watching our youth reach this milestone is so impressive. They have worked hard, stayed dedicated, and overcome challenges along the way to get to that graduation stage.
When we see them in their caps and gowns, it can be easy to focus on the celebration of that one day. But behind every graduate is a story of hard work, perseverance, and growth.
At UMYH, we are incredibly proud of every young person who has worked toward and achieved their High School Equivalency. Graduation is not just about receiving a certificate. It is about celebrating how far they have come and recognizing what they have accomplished.
So, from all of us at UMYH, we want to give a huge CONGRATULATIONS to our graduates! We are proud of you, we celebrate your accomplishments, and we can’t wait to see where your hard work takes you next.
